Well, I was ready to rent a U-Haul last night and move into that house.
Justin reacted favorably, but wanted to sleep on it. That's reasonable, right?
We had a nice evening together. We went to sleep. I started waking up every 20 minutes at about 6 a.m., and have been wired ever since. He's sleeping in.
The suspense is killing me!
I took some pictures of the interior, but they aren't worth much. The little house is nearly 100 years old, but it's been kept up well. It has about as much space as a small two-bedroom apartment - you know, small enough that the renter described it as "cozy" in the classified ad. The floors are a little slanty, the shingles on the outside look worn. The yard is small and hilly. It has no air conditioning.
Those would be issues if we were looking to buy, but we're young and poor! Since we're young and renting until we get a little more established in life, I have to say, this little house would be a good fit until we're ready to upgrade.
I think I'll make a pro/con list, in an attempt to be reasonable.
Pros A whole room's worth more space than we have now. Yard - good for frolicking. Front porch, with swing. Lots of windows. Tree cover. Much larger kitchen than we have now, with a much larger fridge. Doors separating each room (unlike in our current loft apartment/door room). Closer to my work - it would probably cut my daily drive by 5-8 miles. Extra room with enough space for the elliptical trainer my Mom's willing to give me, which means I could drop out of the gym, for a savings of $20 per month. Carpet in better shape than our current carpet. No neighbors through the walls. Enough parking space that we could park side by side, not one behind the other, blocking one another in. Basement storage space, OMG. Easily three times the storage space we have now. Good neighborhood - we'd be surrounded by families, not noisy college kids and rednecks. Screened doors, both on front door and kitchen door. Rent just $25 more than we're paying now.
Cons Looks a little ramshackle from the outside. We'd have to mow, or pay someone to mow. No air conditioning - we'd have to purchase a window unit or suffer. While everything on the interior appears to be in good shape, some of the fixtures look a little run-down. Limited parking - we could probably only have two friends over at a time without asking them to carpool. No dishwasher. That's not really an issue for me - I only use the one we have now once or twice a month. Baseboard heating. Beats the ceiling heat we have now, but still isn't an ideal arrangement. The landlord lives in Dallas, Texas, and I don't know much about him. I would marry the landlord we have now. He's wonderful and attentive. Pets would require a massive deposit, as in a whole 'nother month's rent beyond what we'd already have to put down to live there. Slightly further from Justin's work than where we live now. Is located out of town and near woods, so we'd have more bugs. Rent is $25 more than we're paying now. That's a pro and a con, because I can't be totally sure what utilities will be at the new place. It's unclear how much it would impact my budget either way. The family next door has small children. That could be a noise factor.
Having tried to find fatal flaws, I must say, even after seeing the cons listed one after another, I still WANT THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW.
